Cat Mario is a popular platformer that is notorious for turning the most familiar items into unexpected perils. After just a few minutes of playing you'll realize that all the experience you've gained from dozens of other platform games is essentially meaningless. Every step can be an undetectable trap, an amazing tumble or a situation that will make you chuckle despite the fact that you failed just seconds ago.
At first glance, Cat Mario looks no different from a classic platformer game. You control a white cat, navigating obstacles, dodging enemies, and finding your way to the flag at the end of each level. Everything feels familiar, even somewhat simplistic.
But that's the first trap.
The game is designed to exploit the reflexes and habits players have developed from traditional platform games. When you think a jump is safe, an invisible block might appear right above your head. When you believe the ground ahead is perfectly normal, it might vanish right under your feet.

This is perhaps the most famous trap in the game. Players often take a run-up to make a long jump across a chasm, only to hit their head on a completely invisible block mid-air. Even a small impact is enough to lose momentum and send the character tumbling into the chasm.
Many paths are designed to look exactly like normal ground, but will suddenly disappear when the player steps on them. There are no clear warning signs. No chance to react.
Some creatures in the game appear with familiar looks, but their behavior doesn't follow the rules the player usually expects.
Many players have rejoiced at seeing the finish line ahead, only to be defeated by a trap that appears in the final steps. It's a moment that is both frustrating and memorable.
Cat Mario is designed to deceive the player at every possible opportunity, from the first jumps to the moment when victory seems assured. The strange thing is that the more people are "tricked" by the game, the more they want to try it again. That's why the name Cat Mario is still mentioned as one of the most memorable troll games ever created.
