Definitely Not a Platformer flips the classic platformer formula on its head to create a series of surprising puzzles. You see a safe road ahead, leap onto a platform literally in front of you, or follow a signpost. But things might go the other way. The game has 20 created stages, where the way you see the surroundings changes all the time, pushing you to look closely, experiment and recall what happened before you can find your way to the exit.
In many platformers, looking at the terrain can assist you decide where to leap and how far apart the platforms are. Definitely Not a Platformer bucks that trend with unseen paths and fake platforms.Sometimes you need to step into seemingly empty space, while a seemingly solid surface causes your character to fall. Instead of jumping instinctively, try moving step by step to test the terrain. A single failure can reveal the location of a secret path or help you realize the rules the level is using.
Floors can collapse, changing colors can signal a new mechanism, and signs can sometimes lead you astray. The narrator is not always reliable either. All these factors add up to a puzzle of information checking: you have to tell the difference between helpful clues and material that is intended to mislead.
Each level has its own layout and obstacles thus you should adapt your technique instead of using one formula for all. After finding the right path, you can improve your completion time and reduce the number of deaths. This creates an additional goal for those who want to complete the levels faster after understanding the mechanics.

On an AZERTY keyboard, the game also supports Q/D for movement. On your phone, you can use the left, right, and jump buttons on the screen or tap the play area to jump.
Definitely Not a Platformer is perfect for those who appreciate solving puzzles through observation and experimenting and in particular for those who want to figure out what the underlying laws are behind a level that looks hard.
