Blockader is a roguelite arena shooter that puts players in a circular arena on the moon, where space mice must fight off waves of constantly approaching enemies. Automatic weapon control allows players to focus on positioning, while the upgrade card system determines the character's development direction in each turn.
The highlight of Blockader lies in how the battlefield gradually narrows in terms of choices. Initially, players have plenty of space to move. The more opponents you have, the more an incorrect course choice can get your character cornered or block their escape route.
You need to keep moving, instead than standing motionless and letting the automatic weapon do all the work:
When the wave is over, the pace shifts from reflexes to planning. A number of improvement cards are provided and you have to decide which one is most appropriate for your current position.
Blockader has nearly 100 upgrade cards, in four different rarities. Options such as extra ammo, chain lightning, poison, arrows, or dragon allies can significantly alter how your character deals damage.
It's important to note that not every powerful card is worth choosing. A single upgrade can be very effective, but a chain of complementary effects often creates a more stable build as waves become denser.
Failing a turn doesn't mean everything goes back to square zero. Stars earned during gameplay can be used for Gear upgrades in Offense, Defense, and Utility.
Each character also has their own Skill Tree, creating additional development goals between attempts. With six characters to choose from, starting a new run doesn't necessarily mean repeating the previous build.
A common mistake is focusing only on damage output. When enemies appear from multiple directions, maintaining movement space is equally important.
Prioritize an escape route before you need it. When snipers or dangerous enemy groups appear, instead of chasing each target individually, moving in circles and maintaining space around your character often helps you better control the situation.
Movement becomes increasingly important as the arena fills. Keeping enough room around the character provides more opportunities to react when enemy groups or long-range attacks appear.
Blockader combines two distinct playstyles: reacting to what's happening in the arena and building up strength for the next wave. This combination allows each run to form a different play style instead of just repeating a fixed sequence of actions.
